Greeting from the Dean

Welcome to the Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences
– Fostering expertise through collaboration in medicine, pharmacy, and nursing –

Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Yuji Matsuya

I am Yuji Matsuya, Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Thank you for your interest.
This Graduate School was newly established in 2022 by reorganizing the prior graduate division of medicine and pharmacy. The master’s (pre-doctoral) courses began in 2022, and in 2024 the doctoral (post-doctoral) courses were launched, completing its present structure. Both in the master’s and doctoral phases, “Graduate Common Courses” and “School-wide (Graduate School) Common Courses” are offered, enabling students to acquire integrated cross-disciplinary knowledge. To deepen expertise, “Program-Specific Courses” are also provided, allowing students to gain deep subject-level scholarship. Each student undertakes “Special Research” in their specialized field, writes a degree thesis based on their results, and undergoes degree screening to earn their master’s or doctoral degree.

The research areas within the Graduate School are remarkably diverse. In medicine, you may engage in basic science, clinical medicine, or social medicine. In nursing, the research‐track allows investigation across life stages from childhood to old age; the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) tracks afford eligibility for licensure upon completion. In pharmaceutical sciences, research ranges from chemical, physical, biological, pharmacological, and medical foundations to studies aimed at “creating new drugs,” “discovering new drug functions,” “protecting the body via drugs,” and “bringing scientific insight to traditional (Japanese / Kampo) medicines.”

Importantly, this Graduate School is not limited to applicants with healthcare backgrounds. We actively welcome people from diverse academic origins—non-medical, non-nursing, non-pharmacy—because entry into healthcare science from other fields is socially needed. We hope many consider applying to this Graduate School.

Each program within the Graduate School enthusiastically welcomes students aiming to engage in research across medicine, pharmacy, and nursing or become advanced healthcare professionals. Through specialized education and research, you can pursue becoming an expert in the medical/pharmaceutical field. We look forward to your admission.
